O, my Lord, the stars glitter

By Rabia al Basra (717-801)
translated Charles Upton

O my Lord
the stars glitter
and the eyes of men are closed.
Kings have locked their doors
and each lover is alone with his love.

Here, i am alone with You.

Look when she lived, so long ago. Yet, her poetry is fresh and modern.
Her feelings have no age at all...
Through the ages so many women have felt this (of course men too, but like usual they are not so easily forgotten).
There is a never ending chain of spiritual men and women, join them.
