a special poem
i owe it to Anoop Ji to post a poem today since it is Poetry Day. It is a very special poem written by a young Nigerian poet Chris Albani.
He won the Freedom- to-write award and the Prince Claus award.
His poems are written in prison, written with blood (given by his fellow prisoners). Most of his poems are raw, they cut through your flesh and heart, i will not post these. If you want you can find these poems, i post a milder one, but still ...
EPIPHANY
An artist
I
hang all hope for redemption
on ephemeral incandescent dreams.
Roping faith into filaments of light
I climb on sunbeams
into the very eye of God

sorry, sorry, the poet's name is CHRIS ABANI. Next time i will pay more attention!
i become to know him in 2003 when i saw him perform in Antwerpen,he made such a great impression on me, not only as a poet, but as a human being. If you survived so much pain and evil, how could you stand any other creature?
But he seemed so gentle, so untouched. But when he read his poems the silence in the hall was filled with his pain.
So out of curiosity i "googled" him yesterday evening and find out he is safe now in America en teaching at a university in California.
Good luck Chris Abani!
Hi Manpreet Ji,
I too googled him yesterday ( isn't googling so great!). Ah! you are so lucky to hear him in person. I may have to visit Riverside (CA) just for that one day.
I wonder if one of his nephews studied with me. Few years ago I had classmate from Nigeria and he did talk about his uncle who is a famous and very controversial poet in Nigeria. We ran out of time and thus never talked about poems in detail.
Please most some more poems.
I meant post some more poems on your blog
Oh Anoop Ji, what a coincidence!
So other family members had to leave the country probably too. This world is so far from being perfect....
i will post one more poem of him very soon!
Have a nice weekend!
